If you use an iPhone for both work and personal, like many lawyers do, your ears might have perked up at the announcement of the new iPhone X, launched on September 12. The marketing department at Apple quickly labelled it: “the future of the smart phone.” While the tag line might be a bit bombastic, the launch of this latest evolution of device is certainly of interest to iPhone devotees. LexCloud.ca has therefore taken the time to present, in brief, the top ten updates in the iPhone X.

What’s in a Name?

So is it iPhone X as in the letter X or iPhone 10 as in the Roman numeral signifying the number 10? The answer is in fact the later. The phone is called the iPhone 10 but the 10 is the Roman numeral.

FACEID

The new iPhone has gotten rid of fingerprint unlocking in favor of face recognition software called “FACEID”. This feature, according to Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, “…recognizes you even in the dark.” It even enables emojis that actually read your facial expressions.

No Home Button

iPhone X also ditches the ‘Home’ key so familiar to many iPhone users in favour of swiping. Now the user swipes up from the bottom of the screen to go back to the home screen.

Better Camera

It’s still 12 megapixels but has added Dual Optical Image Stabilization and Portrait Mode on the front and rear camera. Apple promises more light and reduced noise and blur.

Largest iPhone Screen Ever

iPhone X will feature a 5.8-inch edge to edge display which is the largest ever on an iPhone.

All Glass Design

The aluminum housing of previous editions has been replaced by what Tim Cook calls: “the most durable glass on a smartphone.” Hopefully it won’t shatter the first time it slips from your hands.

Powerful New Processor

The new A11 Bionic 6-core processor is super-charged and powers many of the new features like FACEID. It will likely result in a much-improved performance experience over previous models.

Faster Charging

How much faster? Well you should be able to charge 50% within 30 minutes. Again, for Samsung users, this has been standard for some time. But, faithful iPhone users will be thrilled.

Cost

At a whopping $1319 CND for the 64 GB version and $1529 CND for the 256 GB version this is also the most expensive iPhone ever.

Launch Date

October 27 (pre-order), November 3 (release date) at most Canadian cell phone carriers.
